SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Foundation Technology Education Program Presents Canada’s Energy Innovation at a Crossroads: A Global Perspective Tuesday December 18th, 2012 Registration 5:30 PM, event begins 6:00 PM Harbour Centre, Simon Fraser University, Room 1400-1410 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver Registration Link- GreenTech Exchange has recently launched a new website. For current members, please reset your password here before registering for this forum. Description Recently, Canada’s energy sector has gained substantial global attention in areas such as potential pipeline development and proposed foreign M&A activities in the oil and gas space. Meanwhile, media reports how the U.S. - Canada’s only current oil and gas customer - is using its recently developed unconventional fossil fuel resources (combined with reduced energy consumption) to accelerate along the path toward energy independence. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the U.S. will emerge as the world’s leading oil producer by 2020. Meanwhile, Alberta’s oil sands projects report continued high operation costs while producing bitumen that is selling below the average oil market price. Other reports indicate that Canada’s innovation status during the past decade gradually has been slipping down the list of G20 nations. Affordable energy sustainability, the overall economy and the long-term well being of energy users are interconnected, and thus a data-based critical look at Canada’s potential energy future is warranted. By assessing the varying impact of energy innovation in a global perspective, this presentation attempts to demonstrate that Canada could be well positioned to benefit from the IEA’s recently released and much discussed Global Energy Outlook 2012. Clean energy development, energy efficiency, and materials innovation combined with Canada’s energy resource legacy will be discussed as critical enablers toward this goal. About our Speaker Dr. Walter Cicha is with the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), which he joined in 2007. His primary responsibilities are to provide strategic intelligence support for the development and sustainment of SMEs within BC’s clean energy technology community. Walter earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry (1989) from the University of British Columbia. He did a Postdoctoral Fellowship with CE/CEA/CNRS near Paris, France. Since then Walter has worked extensively in his field in various senior positions, most notably as Senior Scientist at GE Global Research in NY and as Senior Chemist at DuPont in DE, where he discovered a nanostructured carbon catalyst system that was more efficient, less toxic, and saved DuPont nearly $30 million to date. In recognition of this accomplishment, Walter and his team received the American Chemical Society’s Hero of Chemistry award. Walter was a Clean Energy Technology Advisor for the BC Nanotechnology Alliance in Vancouver prior to joining the NRC. Walter is the holder of 11 issued patents and the author of nearly 100 publications and reports. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC, a Director on the Board of the Pacific Energy Innovation Association and lectures and writes broadly on the urgent challenges and technical/business opportunities associated with the development of affordable and sustainable energy technology, among other topics. Participation in numerous sports, music performance and community education take up Walter’s spare time, when he is not enjoying it with his wife Zuzana and their two children.

DESCRIPTION:Enterprise Value Creation Considerations For Greentech & Clean Energy Ventures Thursday November 29th, 2012 Registration 5:30 PM, event begins 6:00 PM Harbour Centre, Simon Fraser University, Room 1400-1410 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver Entrepreneurs and principals of Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) must define a value proposition, test it to validate customers, and develop a repeatable and scalable business model. While each venture is unique, there are common principles, benchmarks, and lessons that may guide management in continuously building value throughout multiple investment rounds. It can be quite instructive to see this entire venture lifecycle, identify the major value drivers at each stage, and be able to perform ‘what if’ scenarios to assess management options as a venture progresses. Alan Cornford has extensive understanding in technology innovation approaches and best practices in new venture business development. In this Forum, Alan will identify key processes that generate business value with examples in the Greentech and Clean Energy sectors. He will also introduce an app for managers and venture investors that will help them build and monitor value. About our Speaker Dr. Alan B. Cornford has senior management experience in business, academia and government – principally involving the conduct and management of science research, S&T policy development, technology transfer, innovation and startup company development. Alan has a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and has served as the ADM, Science and Technology for the Province of British Columbia. He was the founding Director of the SFU Industry Liaison Office. Later he initiated technology startups while also undertaking research and consulting on innovation and commercialization for some provincial and federal government departments. Alan contributed to the development of the GLOBE series of Environment and Business Conferences and Trade fairs and served as the Executive Director of the BC Environment Industry Association. SUMMARY:Integrating Solutions for Energy Efficient Homes - The Home Area Network
DESCRIPTION: Integrating Solutions for Energy Efficient Homes - The Home Area Network Tuesday, June 26th, 2012 Registration 5:30 PM, event begins 6:00 PM Harbour Centre, Simon Fraser University Room 1400-1410 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver Consumer energy management - Bringing innovative technologies and effective solutions together for comfort, cost savings and environmental sustainability Home is where people live and it is a key battle ground for energy conservation. Experts in the energy domain have indicated repeatedly on the importance of energy conservation in balancing supply and demand of power and energy consumption in the coming years. Finding new sources of renewable energy is much needed and the efforts are continuing. Having the renewables by itself on the supply side is necessary but not sufficient. This must be augmented by a corresponding and concerting effort to reduce and better manage the demand side. There are technologies and solutions in the marketplace for deployment in the home. From a consumer perspective, it is more efficient to have these solutions integrated together in a systematic way in the form of a home network. The keynote speaker for the June 26 GTEx Forum will provide insights and current trends in this area. About the Speaker Ted Singh is the Business Development Manager and co-founder of Embedded Automation. With over 20 years of expertise in the area of industrial software, he manages Embedded Automation's dynamic suite of automated systems designed to make the home more energy efficient. Previously, Ted held business development positions at Triant Technologies, Brooks Automation, Cimetrix Robotic Systems, Adept Technologies and Taylor Industrial Software. Ted earned a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering and a Business Development Diploma from the University of Alberta. Complimentary registration is now open to members; new members are welcome www.greentechexchange.ca

SUMMARY:Adjusting the Energy Supply and Demand Balance: How to Make "Energy Efficiency" Real and Effective
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Foundation Technology Education Program Presents Adjusting the Energy Supply and Demand Balance How to make “energy efficiency” real and effective To Register Visit: www.greentechexchange.ca New Members are Welcome. In the push for better energy demand management, organizations are often faced with questions about the cost-effectiveness of energy efficiency. The practice of demand-side energy efficiency is somewhat polarized and in this GTE session Dr. Eric Mazzi of the UBC CERC will evaluate both sides of this issue. Energy efficiency is essential and cost-effective Evidence abounds that our energy consumption levels are exceeding our biosphere’s assimilation limits, that high quality of life standards can be maintained with large reductions in per-capita energy use, that energy efficiency is cost-effective, and that it is challenging to have the time or resource to make supply-side changes fast enough at the scale required. Energy efficiency is ineffective Some experts argue that rebound effects, free riders, cross effects and other phenomenon imply that energy efficiency can be expensive, potentially harmful, and that it may eventually cause increased energy consumption. What you will learn in this session Eric will briefly highlight key insights for both sides of this issue. He will then articulate that more efficient energy systems might be realized from improvements in the application of sound science and systems thinking. The importance of a clear conceptual understanding of energy efficiency and terminology will be emphasized, a macro-level view of energy systems will be reviewed, and the importance of behaviour will be reinforced. A few examples of scientifically sound, systems approaches will be identified. About Our Speaker Dr. Eric Mazzi is the Power Smart® Instructor at UBC’s Clean Energy Engineering master’s program. In this UBC program, he is responsible for the demand-side energy efficiency course and supervision of Master’s degree projects. He has taught engineering fluid mechanics, and also teaches professional workshops on energy management. Eric has B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering, and a doctorate in quantitative policy analysis. Eric has over 20 years experience in applied engineering, research, operation and maintenance. He has published articles on environmental and public health issues associated with energy use.

SUMMARY:Women Uplighting Women in Energy
DESCRIPTION:Jessica McIlroy is creating opportunities with women in British Columbia's energy sector to connect, mentor and support each other. I was privileged to be among them at the BC Women in Energy Network (BC WEN) launch reception at the Generate 2011 conference on Monday, September 26th. The Oxford Room in the Vancouver Hyatt was intimate and casual with a warm glow of feminine influence and draped with business acumen sparkling from years of collective experience. "Leading by values and seeking out mentors," according to Theresa Conway, is the way to make it in a world where only three percent of Chief Executive Officers are women. It was one of the most productive and enjoyable networking events I have attended; a significant note coming from an introvert. Check out the next event on November 4th at the Century Plaza Hotel.

SUMMARY:Renewable Energy and the Electricity Grid – PEIA FORUM 2011
DESCRIPTION:May 17th – PEIA FORUM 2011 Topic: Renewable Energy and the Electricity Grid Location: Hilton Vancouver Metrotown – 6083 McKay Ave. @ Kingsway, Burnaby, BC Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Tuesday, May 17th The detailed program is available online at: http://peia.biz/component/content/article/6-forums/32-peia-forum-2011-program.html FORUM PURPOSE: To raise awareness in the BC Energy Community of the issues involved in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources into the electricity grid, and to identify opportunities for innovation and technology development. A widely held perception among advocates for a clean energy future is that an abundance of solar, wind and other renewable energy sources will solve our energy and GHG problems. That is partly true, but does not reflect the major challenges involved in integrating these intermittent, unpredictable and sometimes remotely located sources into an electrical grid, on which the public and industry depend for continuous and reliable firm power.

SUMMARY:More With Less Longer: Nanotechnology as an Enabler for Cleaner Energy Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Thursday, April 21, 2011 Registration at 5:30pm, Event at 6pm with networking to follow Simon Fraser University at Harbour Centre 1400-515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver There are more people in the world today using energy to power their lifestyles. Yet, increasingly expensive fossil fuels continue to provide for more than 80% of the required primary energy. Clearly, this is not sustainable. But then, what is? Can nanotechnology help fuel our electron- and horsepower-dependent lifestyles? What role can it play in energy conversion and storage? Award-winning Dr. Walter Cicha will present on how today's nanotechnology discoveries could provide a substantial link between a world that still is predominantly fueled by limited “traditional” energy sources and the much more efficiently powered analog that will be necessitated tomorrow. The overriding vision of late Nobel Laureate Richard Smalley will serve as a guiding light. Although a global perspective will be provided, special attention will be given to challenges and opportunities in BC. For Registration click here

SUMMARY:SustainaBUILD Conference
DESCRIPTION:We are in the midst a massive paradigm shift of the real estate and development industries toward "green" innovations in design, construction and operation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to reverse the effects of Climate Change. However over the past few years indoor air quality, mould and moisture problems related to building envelope and ventilation systems have gained a reputation within the construction, design and building management communities as often difficult and complicated issues. There has been a rapid adoption of green building certification systems for new and existing buildings that claim to protect occupant health while achieving climate change objectives. But are all green buildings healthy buildings? This one day conference will seek to provide answers to this pressing issue by addressing the myths and misconceptions surrounding sustainable green buildings and health in the context of the building envelope and ventilation. SUMMARY:Gaining Ground - Eco Logical
DESCRIPTION:For registration click here. In the aftermath of Copenhagen, Gaining Ground re-asserts its belief in what California Governor Schwarzenegger calls “the tremendous role of sub-national governments in climate-change mitigation.” Gaining Ground: Resilient Cities in October, 2009 laid the foundation for just this contention, and Mark Holland’s powerful Resilient Cities Manifesto eloquently summed up the work of the conference and set out a roadmap for action in the immediate future. Our 2010 conference is focused on the idea that North American cities—in partnership with their respective states and provinces—need to plan and act as the de facto leaders of an ecological project that includes climate action, and which is really about designing and implementing complete new strategies for sustaining a healthy economy and social well-being while profoundly reducing inputs in energy and all other forms of natural capital. Conditions are calling for rapid evolution of thought and practice regarding adaptation to emerging climate conditions and for the design of the most coherent, manageable, measurable programs, and this can only be undertaken by nimble cities and urban regions with an informed citizenry and poised, broad-based leadership. Frankly, what North America needs is ‘one-planet’ cities: places whose consumption footprint matches their share of the planet’s carrying capacity. Many cities in North America and elsewhere are grappling with this challenge; and the wisest are seeing it not as a burden but a chance to identify opportunities in the emerging green economy and the means to achieve critical long-range economic and efficiency goals. Arizona State University’s Jon Fink, at the 2009 Vancouver Gaining Ground conference, Resilient Cities, spoke about the need for an “urban genome project” that could reveal the most successful protocols, strategies, organizing principles, policies and partnerships with senior government by which to foster the move to complete urban sustainability. All of this calls for leapfrogging innovation; and laying out the conditions that foster this kind of urban innovation is a central job of the 2010 Gaining Ground conference—one that will engage attendees from every sector. This speaks in particular to opportunities in the green economy and to the enormous task of cross-sector skills-building needed to capture such opportunities. The conference will offer compelling demonstrations that the highest levels of resilience and adaptability require a deep shift in governance thinking toward informed partnership and successful collaboration between all urban constituents: government, community, business, education, innovation, culture, organizations, and administrative agencies. It will put a particular emphasis on education—as delivered by existing learning institutions and new social networks—as the means of accelerating a change in values and behaviour. The conference hopes to attract not just speakers who can constructively address these themes, but also a number of North American mayoral teams—building on the very successful visit last conference by Portland Mayor Sam Adams leading a large delegation. It will focus also on the strategic intention to nurture Vancouver as an urban sustainability transaction hub (a ‘head office’ for urban sustainability)—that is, a global centre for the presentation and exchange of sustainability innovation and practice, and a centre for learning and training. Building on the successes of the 2009 conference shoulder program, Gaining Ground: Eco-Logical will again invite its partners to conceive relevant shoulder events and activities that can nest within the conference framework. Additionally, the conference will include a green jobs, learning/training and volunteering fair. Recognizing that sustainability is not simply a body of practice but that it is also driven by social narrative tied to place, the 2010 conference will host a significant cultural component and will also likely feature a ‘footprint clock’—sculptural expressions (with highly visible post-conference homes) evoking the need to align city consumption and the capacities of the regional ecosystem.

The Gamma product series is compatible with commonly available cost-efficient dimmer switches that lighting designers and customers demand, simplifying the installation process within existing building infrastructures. LED technology has made dramatic advancements over the past few years. Today’s leading-edge LED lighting technologies deliver the required quantity and quality of light, and feature the aesthetics and thermal management capabilities, in cost-effective solutions to displace conventional lighting technologies. “Elpro has a history of flexibility and innovation, so we are very proud to offer cutting edge LED technology that really satisfy customers’ demands,” said Horst Wiegelmann, Executive Director of Elpro. With an estimated 150 million phase cut dimmers installed in North American residences, Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Light-Based Technologies, stated: “Triac, or phase cut, dimming is especially important due to the massive installed base, which is why we focused on developing our best-in-class solution. We are very glad our efforts are being recognized, and are ecstatic about being chosen by Bridgelux and Elpro to highlight their products.” “The Gamma line is the result of a successful collaboration between three technology leaders committed to bringing to market high quality, energy efficient solid state lighting products to transform the global lighting industry into a $100 Billion dollar market opportunity. Bridgelux is focused on delivering integrated plug and play solutions tailored specifically for lighting, where energy savings, design flexibility and other benefits are beginning to drive massive adoption of solid state lighting,” says Jason Posselt, Vice-President of Marketing for Bridgelux. SUMMARY:CANBIO Bioenergy Conference & Trade Show
DESCRIPTION:Making bioenergy projects happen is our mandate, yet we are aware that many bioenergy projects don't make financial sense in Canada. Which ones do work, and where? That's what our June 15 conference "Bioenergy Business Models that Work" will deliver! We will also have a 10-15-company trade show, with equipment and knowhow that work here! As shown in Europe, supportive policies often make the difference between bioenergy development and inaction. On June 16 we will address exactly that – Policy: What Works and What Doesn’t. We will compare policies in Canadian jurisdictions with those that have been successful in the US and Scandinavia, and make recommendations accordingly. On Day 1, hear from the entrepreneurs behind Canada’s successfully-operating, small and large-scale bio-heat, CHP, pellet, and biofuel projects. Learn how linking bio-refineries to existing sawmill or pulp operations can yield dramatically higher socioeconomic benefits. Find out how leading gasification technology companies like Nexterra and Rankin Cycle installations can yield better economics. Discover how to overcome obstacles, and have your project questions answered. Meet companies at our tradeshow. Want to exhibit? Sign up below. On Day 2, we will discuss current bioenergy policies in Canada: why do pellet plants thrive in some provinces, not in others; what level of feed-in-tariff is needed to make CHP work; what is the impact of steam engineer regulations on CHP; what is happening in Climate Change policy? See how BC became the first province to topple antiquated steam engineer legislation and requirement for US-only certification. What policy support do biofuels, bio-heat, bio-power, pellets, bio-refineries need to thrive in Canadian communities, many of which are foundering with the forest industry. Hear what has worked in Scandinavia and New England and see what we need to change. REGISTER TODAY FOR AN EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT!

SUMMARY:U.S.-Canada Clean Energy Dialogue 2010 Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Clean Energy Dialogue (CED) was announced in February 2009 when President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper met in Ottawa. The CED is charged with expanding clean energy research and development, developing and deploying clean energy technology, and building a more efficient electricity grid based on clean and renewable energy in order to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change in both countries. U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Canadian Minister of Environment Jim Prentice serve as the lead government officials for moving the CED forward. See the CED Action Plan (PDF 702 KB) and First Report (PDF 71 KB) to the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of the United States of America. The United States and Canada recognize energy trade as a pathway to achieving renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. The North American electricity market is deeply integrated across national borders. For example, electricity flows between Canadian provinces and interconnected U.S. jurisdictions exceed interprovincial power transfers. These flows are important for balancing loads and managing reliability in both countries.

SUMMARY:Final day for SDTC - SOI applications to be filed
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is a not-for-profit foundation that finances and supports the development and demonstration of clean technologies which provide solutions to issues of climate change, clean air, water quality and soil, and which deliver economic, environmental and health benefits to Canadians. SDTC operates two funds aimed at the development and demonstration of innovative technological solutions. The $550 million SD Tech Fund™ supports projects that address climate change, air quality, clean water, and clean soil. The $500 million NextGen Biofuels Fund™ supports the establishment of first-of-kind large demonstration-scale facilities for the production of next-generation renewable fuels. The Statement Of Interest The Statement of Interest (SOI) phase was created to provide applicants an early assessment of their project’s compliance with SDTC funding criteria before they invest the considerable time required to compile a full proposal. SDTC evaluates SOIs based on the claimed and described capabilities in technology, marketing, and business (partnerships and funding). Each of these topics is essential to project assessment. Applicants should note that SDTC does not intend to contribute to early-stage research, nor to pure commercial activities or project financing. Rather, we aim to support the pre-commercial development and demonstration stages of new sustainable development technologies relevant to the primary economic sectors in Canada.

SUMMARY:PEIA - Energy Breakfast- “Bioenergy: Transportation Fuel Options”
DESCRIPTION: Pacific Energy Innovation Association Energy Breakfast - “Bioenergy: Transportation Fuel Options” Speaker: Don O’Connor, President, (S&T)2 Consultants Inc. Don O’Connor is a mechanical engineer with a broad background in energy and environmental consulting and in industry. His background includes over 15 years of manufacturing and marketing experience with Western Canada’s largest independent fuel retailer. He has had extensive experience with the production of biofuels, was responsible for the development of NRCan’s GHGenius lifecycle greenhouse gas model, and has a detailed knowledge of fuels and the fuels industry. Don has recently provided strategic advice on fuels and transportation issues to a number of Provincial governments, several Federal Government departments and foreign governments. Mr. O’Connor has also consulted for a number of companies developing new technologies for alternative fuelled vehicles and companies developing new transportation fuel processes. British Columbia has announced its intention in the recent provincial budget to become a top destination for clean energy dollars (see http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/bc-fuels-fight-with-ontario-over-bioenergy/article1495726/ ). British Columbia has also introduced both a Renewable Fuel Standard and a Low Carbon Fuel Standard for 2010 which requires that suppliers who sell gasoline or diesel in the Province must ensure that it contains a prescribed proportion of renewable fuel – ethanol produced from biomass (5%) or biodiesel (3% increasing to 5% by 2012). Don will review these recent developments and their impact on the biofuel industry in British Columbia. He will also discuss the transportation fuel options that we will likely see now and in the near future. RSVP: Reply to this email. Tel: 778-986-2001, Email: info@peia.biz Due to increased attendance at our breakfasts, please pre-register.

SUMMARY:OREG 2010 Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:The OREG annual conference (Vancouver, Oct 27 and 28) has a strong agenda, good early sign-up and great sponsors. People are busy organising side events on October 26 and 29 so this is emerging as an important ocean energy week. If you have not made a decision to attend, today would be none too soon to do so... Click here to register. Please book your room at the Sheraton Wall Centre as soon as possible. You should use our room allocation! Also, OREG has just produced a discussion paper on the role of feed-in-tariffs in the development of ocean energy in Canada. Our conference will have leaders in the development of the Nova Scotia and the British Columbia programmes, so participants can expect the emergence of a market in Canada to be both a presentation and a hot hallway topic. The contracting for the four cables for Minas Passage was in part triggered by the Clean Energy Fund commitments this spring - another topic and no doubt a major buzz is the prospect of four 20MW offshore interconnections sinks in! You might also hear about generators at work in Montreal and SW Nova Scotia!
