TransCanada enters into solar generation
Monday, December 26th, 2011Calgary, has agreed to purchase nine Ontario solar projects from Canadian Solar Solutions Inc., with a combined capacity of 86 megawatts (MW), for approximately $470-million. All nine projects have 20-year power purchase agreements with the Ontario Power Authority.

Alberta company pursuing ethylene from methane
Monday, November 7th, 2011Alberta-based Quantiam Technologies is one of five companies worldwide highlighted in new research by Vancouver-based cleantech research company Kachan & Co.
Kachan has published an abstract of a new private study that found 24 companies worldwide at the forefront of the science of converting methane into the high value chemical ethylene, used in the production of plastics and other important industrial projects. For decades, chemical engineers have been pursuing cost effective ways to make this key industrial compound from other things. Now, a handful of companies think they’re honing in on ways to make ethylene from the methane in natural gas with commercially viable processes… something that’s been tried for decades by the oil majors for decades but has been elusive so far.

Kruger Energy to start construction of a wind farm In Monteregie
Wednesday, July 13th, 2011Kruger Energy Inc. today announced that its affiliated company Kruger Energy Monteregie L.P. KEMONT will begin construction of a wind farm in Monteregie this August. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Saint-Isidore Town Hall and attended by Pierre Moreau, Minister responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs and MNA for Chateauguay. The wind farm is slated to go on line in December 2012.

Waste-to-Fuel Startup Enerkem Raises $60M From Valero, Investors
Thursday, June 2nd, 2011Enerkem has a couple of facilities in the works. One in Westbury, Quebec, which at one point was expected to produce about 1.5 million gallons per year of methanol from old telephone poles, with ethanol next on the list of biofuels to produce. Another plant, which is expected to cost $70 million and could crank out about 10 million gallons of ethanol per year, is being planned with Greenfield Ethanol, Canada’s largest ethanol producer, right next to an Edmonton, Alberta municipal composting facility.

Cenovus Energy invests in Saltworks Technologies & General Fusion
Tuesday, May 31st, 2011Cenovus Energy, a Canada based integrated oil company, is investing a total of $6.3m in Saltworks Technologies and General Fusion to support the development of alternative and renewable energy sources.The company will provide $2.5m to Saltworks Technologies and $3.8m to General Fusion through its environmental opportunity fund EOF.Saltworks has developed an energy efficient way to convert salt water into fresh water through desalination by harnessing low-temperature heat provided by solar energy or waste heat thereby reducing mechanical and/or electrical energy.
