Vessel finds new life in UVic research

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

An old coast guard ship could be transformed into the “world’s greenest oceanresearch platform” off B.C.’s coast by next spring.

“It’s going to be essentially a mobile observatory in the Salish Sea that will be studying oceanographic conditions that are important to survival of fish stocks,” said Kim Juniper, lead scientist for the project.

Natural gas presents B.C. with challenges, opportunities

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

What few suspected then – and are surprised by now – is that another fossil fuel, natural gas, would end up on Obamas approved list. In a speech in late January, Obama, standing in front of two Kenworth T800 LNG trucks at a UPS truck-refuelling site in Las Vegas, shared a vision of natural gas powering cars, homes and factories, adding that the cleaner, cheaper energy source could support 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. “Weve got a supply of natural gas under our feet that can last America nearly 100 years,” he said. Indeed, advances in extraction technology have allowed producers to access previously locked-in gas through fracking and new drilling techniques.

The low cost of Natural Gas is changing the landscape for clean energy in BC and beyond.  Read more about some of the implications here.

FortisBC Talks Up Natural Gas Fuel Opportunities for British Columbia

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Walker explains that, as set out in the strategy, expanding the use of natural gas for return-to-base fleet vehicles in Canada’s transportation sector makes sense. By using natural gas instead of diesel or gasoline, a local business can save 25-to-40% on fuel costs and see a 20-to-30% reduction of GHG emissions. The transportation sector currently contributes almost 40$ of BC’s GHG emissions in the province.

Great to see that the interest and benefit for converting to CNG is getting support now. Read more at Natural Gas Fuel Opportunities for British Columbia

Greentech and Clean Energy: Perspectives & Insights from the Mining Industry

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Registration 5:30 PM, event begins 6:00 PM

Harbour Centre, Simon Fraser University

Room 1400-1410

515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver

Ready to explore the potential of green technologies in the world of mining?

Dr. John Thompson from Teck Resources Limited will describe the role that the modern mining industry plays in society and the technical challenges that the industry faces with increasing demand. New approaches and innovations are required to address these challenges. Examples will be presented including new opportunities for green technology.

One of the critical challenges facing the industry is energy, both total consumption and intensity. Renewable energy in mining operations and new projects are not easy but the mining industry is moving quickly to evaluate the options. Several companies, including Teck, have invested in renewable energy to offset consumption from traditional sources.
