About our Speakers
Tara Moreau is a postdoctoral research fellow working in collaboration with the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, the Institute for Sustainable Horticulture (KPU) and the Design Centre for Sustainability (UBC). She recently completed a PhD from The Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC and obtained an MSc from Dalhousie University and the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada. She has worked as an organic agriculture consultant with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and is Vice-President of the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation. Tara will explore the impacts and solutions of a changing climate on agriculture.
Stephen Fane FCA, is currently CEO of Alterrus Systems Inc. a company concentrating on developing and implementing vertical, urban agriculture solutions. Before his career in agriculture he was a partner at Coopers & Lybrand, a predecessor firm to Price Waterhouse Coopers.
Chris Bush is the founder of Catalyst Power Inc. and built the first anaerobic digester for agriculture in BC, which is also still the only agriculturally based digester delivering biomethane into a utility grid. After building the facility, he has now returned to his initial intent of enabling emerging technologies to develop through integration and collaboration. Chris will speak to the topic of “Technology meets Permaculture” and how we can manage the outputs by managing the inputs in opportunities of integrated resource recovery.
Herb Barbolet is an Associate with both the Centre for Sustainable Community Development and the Dialogue Centre at SFU and a Research Associate with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Biomass Power and Thermal
Thursday, April 5th, 2012A headwind is approaching the biomass energy sector, and it’s called cheap natural gas. Fracking has dramatically changed the supply outlook for natural gas in North America for the foreseeable future and biomass proponents who fail to factor it into their planning will regret it.
What this story does not speak to is CO2 emissions and climate change which is still an issue with natural gas, a little less so than with heating oil but still an issue that we need to consider.

Japan examining wind potential for replacing nuclear
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012With the national government still debating the permanent closure of its nuclear generation capacity, Japan has begun to turn to wind power, according to Bloomberg.
A new project is looking to develop the largest offshore wind plant in the world, just off the coast of Fukushima, where one of the country’s nuclear power plants failed last year.
Because of the deep waters around Japan, the project intends to make use of floating turbines, attached to large barges rather than secured to the ocean floor.
This technology is still in the relatively early stages of development, but it holds some hope for countries like Japan, which boasts extensive coastline but few places where the ocean floor is shallow enough for wind turbines.
