When people talk green energy in Ontario they mostly discuss two technologies: solar panels and wind turbines.

That’s unfortunate, because it overshadows the contribution that other renewable energy sources can and should be making, particularly biogas and landfill gas derived from organic waste.

$8.4M injection kick-starts Vegreville biofuel centre

The provincial and federal governments will pump $8.4 million into a new bio-waste energy centre near Vegreville hosting eight firms that will work together to get new technologies into the global marketplace more quickly.

The BioWaste to Energy for Canada Integration Initiative Corp., called BECii, is an industry-driven, not-for-profit organization that will establish the BECii Clean Energy Centre at the existing Grow-Gen biogas plant in Hairy Hill.

GuelphMercury.com – Local – Guelph partners with European firm to build local power systems

GUELPH — The city’s power corporation has contracted a European firm to build three small, high-efficiency power plants in Guelph, the first of which will be located in the new Hanlon Creek Business Park.

The combined heat and power district energy systems will be built by Dalkia Canada, a subsidiary of the French multinational Veolia Environnement.

Together, the plants will power the equivalent of 15,000 homes while supplying heat and air conditioning to nearby buildings, a spokesperson for Guelph Hydro Inc. said Thursday.

Nova Scotia joins Canada’s green energy club

Nova Scotia has been quietly setting out ambitious targets for green energy, targets that surpass California’s. The Premier was even recently presented an award, at the Copenhagen meetings last December, for making North America’s first law on hard capping carbon emissions. Climate change is clearly important for the province that historically has strong links to coal. See more.

Quebec struggles with excess electricity while promoting renewable energy

As the Quebec shuts down major cogeneration electricity plants, hemoraging money while it does so, the province is still forging ahead with costly plans to build more hydro dams and clean energy projects. Consumers’ groups and Quebec have been butting heads over unfair consumer burden and future energy needs, like those from electric cars.
