Largest roof mounted solar system in Canada
Thursday, June 30th, 2011The 600 kilowatt installation will allow the city to generate electricity directly from the sun and contribute to the region’s electricity grid. This will create enough energy to power 100 homes. The establishment of the Kitchener Operations Facility included rehabilitating 45 acres of industrial land and upgrading a 300,000 square foot industrial building. Once complete, the facility will have room for approximately 500 city staff, vehicles and equipment, and house various municipal services including road, watermain and sewer maintenance, snow clearing, and parks and woodland services.

There’s a role for biomass energy in Ontario
Tuesday, June 14th, 2011Growth in biomass-to-electricity could be also be achieved by increasing incentives available (as unlikely as that might sound now). A recent report by Queen’s University estimated that FIT rates for wood-to-electricity would have to rise to $0.273/kWh — about twice the current rate — in order to provide a 20-year internal rate of return of 27 per cent and a three-year payback period. Many would argue that a rise in incentives is wrong, given the fact that that the Ontario government is facing record deficits. Perhaps this would change if the potential long-term payoff of such an investment was better understood.

Italy Overhauls Its PV Incentives
Saturday, May 21st, 2011In 2010, Europe’s PV market entered a new dimension, and Italy played a key part in that. Figures released by industry association EPIA this spring indicate that new PV installations across Europe totalled 12.5 GW, for the first time overtaking installations of new wind. Indeed, PV accounted for 21% of all new power generating capacity, according to EPIA. Yet as Italy's numbers for 2010 continue to be processed, it appears that across Europe this figure may need to be updated to something nearer 14 GW.
