New York Sun is Rising | Renewable Energy News Article
Saturday, January 12th, 2013The Governor called for a major expansion of his NY-Sun Initiative. The original NY-Sun, announced by the Governor at last year’s State of the State, called for doubling solar installations in 2012 and quadrupling in 2013. However, that program was too small and too intermittent–while helpful, it fell short of accomplishing the job of market transformation.
Apple Delves Deeper into Renewable Energy, Offers Wind Energy Storage Concept
Saturday, January 12th, 2013This past spring, Apple announced that it was building a 20-MW solar farm to help power its data center in Maiden, North Carolina. After construction was completed, it bought another 200 acres of nearby land to build an additional 20-MW solar farm, according to reports. The facility also contains a 5-MW biogas-powered fuel cell installation. Apple claims that it intends to power two additional data centers with renewable energy by early 2013.
Does Santa Drive a Prius or a Hummer? | ECO Canada
Wednesday, December 12th, 2012Santa’s yearly jaunt around the globe puts 44,000 km on his odometer twice the average North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip and that consequently, the reindeer power only the forward momentum at over 3100km/h, then we can determine that they burn a whopping 980 million calories each!! So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories? Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to scarf down 16,500 lbs – or 1.6 acres. Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own implications that we’ll leave for another calculation.
Faster Ice for the NHL?
Friday, October 19th, 2012As we wait for word on the NHL lockout, we can think about how to make the game even faster. No, not with hotly debated rule changes but with an energy-efficient technology from Real-Ice that takes the tiny bubbles out of the ice, making way for a smoother, faster surface. Already endorsed by the International Ice Hockey Federation and other European national hockey associations, it is claimed that a 20-40% energy savings or 20,000- 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced on an annual basis. For more on this clean game changer, read full story here.
Taking education to a higher & more valuable level
Tuesday, October 9th, 2012There’s a lot to take in. It’s not even lunchtime and we’ve listened to presentations by Craig Venter on his plans to create biofuels made by microalgae: an acre, he believes, will be able to produce 10,000 litres of oil per year, as opposed to corn, which can produce just 18. He’s just received $300m of investment from Exxon to make it a reality.
