Ferry Fuel Of The Future: LNG ?

Monday, October 17th, 2011

“It will never work because there is no infrastructure!” I wonder how many times these words, or their 19thcentury equivalents, were spoken by sailing ship owners contemplating the move into mechanical propulsion.

So here we go again – its time to shift fuel, we know it needs to be done, yet the industry (or some organization related to the industry still resist the change). The fact that Natural Gas is available and available at a lower cost than Oil, Diesel or Bunker (as they call it) is well know. The fact that LNG is also cleaner and emits far less SOx and Nox than bunker, may not be so well known. The fact that if a ship with LNG would run aground – which happens once in 1,000,000-10,000,000 trips (also called low risk) – it would not pollute (that is require manual clean-up) may not be so well known.

Now we can also add the fact that LNG could be partially or completely renewable if it is made from Biogas (which is made from old food waste).  So all in all LNG as a fuel for ships seems to be a pretty clean and green solution.

LNG-powered LNG tanker vessel design

In just one short year, the world’s first fully gas powered ship will be delivered to Dutch company, Anthony Veder Group. In a move that can only be seen as positive, an insider was quoted as saying,  “Here we are developing the environmentally-friendly ‘green’ shipping of the future. This makes not only ecologic, but also economic sense.” For more details, see here.

IMW Comments on China Experience | NGV Global

Friday, June 24th, 2011

IMW Industries, manufacturer and supplier of turn-key fueling systems for CNG stations and bulk CNG systems, has now completed construction of more than 100 CNG stations in China, as well as numerous CNG stations throughout the Asia Pacific region, in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea. As a company immersed in China since 2000 and establishing a sales/service hub in Shanghai in 2006, IMW has had opportunity to observe, appreciate and comment on development of the natural gas industry in this dynamic country, as follows.

Read more here about how CNG is growing rapidly in China and with many stations originating from IMW in Chilliwack.  Hopefully we will see CNG take off in BC and Canada as well in the near future. IMW Comments on China Experience

Credit Suisse Recommends NGVs for Portfolio Acquisitions

Monday, June 6th, 2011

As for the securities in which to invest, according to Swiss experts investors should focus on manufacturers of engines, fuel tanks, gas infrastructure and gas stations, and on some vehicle manufacturers. A ”shopping list” apparently reveals such OEMs as Canada’s Westport Innovations, US company Fuel Systems Solutions and Italy’s Landi Renzo. Clean Energy Fuels, Fiat, Volkswagen and Volvo are also mentioned.

Interesting to see Credit Suisse recommending a secotr to invest in.  This is good for the strong Canadian companies in the sector.  Read more at Credit Suisse Recommends NGVs for Portfolio Acquisitions

Westport and Caterpillar to Jointly Evaluate Natural Gas Fuel Systems

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Westport Innovations Inc., an alternative fuel, low-emissions transportation technologies provider, has entered into an agreement with Caterpillar, Inc. to evaluate direct injection, natural gas fuel system technologies for possible use on Caterpillar’s large engines. As part of the agreement, the parties will combine their respective technologies and components to develop a fuel system that will be evaluated on a multi-cylinder test engine.

Canadian bio natural gas companies profiled in report

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Canadian companies at the forefront of innovation in the emerging bio natural gas sector are profiled in a new research study by Kachan & Co.

BC’s G4 Insight, Quebec’s Xebec and Ontario’s Eco-Tech are among 16 promising vendors worldwide profiled in The Bio Natural Gas Opportunity, a 50+ page report available from Kachan & Co.

Bio natural gas (BNG) is known by other names—like bioSNG, renewable natural gas and biomethane—but as a biologically-created compound chemically similar to commercial fossil-based natural gas, it’s poised to make an impact on the natural gas marketplace and as a new entrant in the world of next generation advanced biofuels, and even give solar and wind a run for their money for renewable power generation. More detail on the report here and here.

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has signed long-term agreements with four major airport complexes to design, build, own and operate new compressed natural gas (CNG) stations to support ground transport vehicles and off-airport parking shuttles. The new Clean Energy stations, available 24/7 for public access, will be located in New York City, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Tampa.

It should hopefully not be long until we start to see more CNG usage in Canada as well.  Read more at Fleet Briefing: CNG at Airports

Taking Advantage of Abundant Natural Gas – Commodities – Resource Investor

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Companies with exposure to the roll out of natural gas as a transportation fuel will benefit immensely from this trend. There are two companies that are well poised to benefit:Clean Energy Fuels CLNE, a provider of natural gas fuel for transportation in North America, including compressed natural gas or CNG and liquified natural gas or LNG.Westport Innovations WPT.TO, which Has developed technologies to allow high-performance, fuel-efficient engines to run on natural gas, and hydrogen. Before Obamas speech on March 30, shares traded just shy of $19, Tuesdays close for Westport was $23.84.

Westport is in the right place to take advantage of growth in the CNG sector.  Read more here Taking Advantage of Abundant Natural Gas

Heckmann Corp Will Employ Largest LNG Transport Fleet in North America

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

HWR has issued a purchase order for 200 Peterbilt 367 liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks incorporating Westport Heavy Duty Systems (Westport HD), from Westport. Although the purchase price of NGVs is higher than diesel trucks, the significantly reduced life cycle operating cost of NGVs is conducive to operating the heavy-duty trucks on natural gas. Additionally, because of cleaner combustion, the average operating life of NGVs is considerably longer.

Great to see how LNG is growing and getting more popular.  Hopefully we will see more orders coming from Canada  soon.  Read more at Heckmann Corp Will Employ Largest LNG Transport Fleet
